Latent Joy, Graphic Score Garment, 2021

Vivienne Griffin and Paul Purgas have collaborated to develop a new ensemble performance, Latent Joy. Created especially for AGM 2021 and Somerset House’s neighbouring Baroque church St Mary Le Strand. This long-sleeved garment links to the graphic score created for the piece, which acts as an intuitive prompt for a live improvisation realised by the ensemble, which features Flora Yin-Wong, rkss, Joe Namy, Nik Nak and Annie Goh. Working across a variety of media, encompassing spatial feedback, computer music, live percussion and turntable experiments, the group animate the score, reimagining this fragmentary notational prompt as a unified sonic action, manifesting as a collective free improvisation.
